February 2010
Dear Robey Families,
We have some exciting events occurring this month including our 5th annual Science Celebration and Invention Convention February 16-18. We hope that you will join us on Thursday, February 18 for our Science Family Night to browse our science projects and inventions. This year we are featuring hands-on science learning thanks to our Advanced Science Club and our very own Mad Scientist, Mrs. Verhoeven!!
In addition to science and inventions we will be studying famous Americans as we honor President’s Day and Black History month. We’ll learn about another culture as we celebrate Chinese New Year. We’ll maintain to focus on literacy as we become more adept in Readers Workshop and continue our work with critical thinking through our writing frameworks.
We need your help! Our season of summative testing is soon upon us with district assessments in March and the CAT9 and AIMS assessments in early April. Please continue to talk to your child about what he or she has learned in school that day and ask for details. The conversations you have with your children provide practice in many of the skills that we work with each day including sequencing of events and the use of descriptive language. If your child can explain to you about rainforest habitats, reducing fractions or the new book their teacher read to them he or she has truly understood the concepts and skills presented.
I ask for your help as we pay tribute to famous Americans and the holiday of the heart, St. Valentine’s Day. Please think about the power that you have as a positive role model for your child and all of our children when you are here at Robey. Please use your best judgment and courtesy while in the parking and loading zones. Cars and kids together are an unsafe combination when you are in a hurry. Avoid a major distraction by putting away your cell phone for the few moments you are picking up your child. Ask your child about the Robey Way of kindness, honesty, respect, and responsibility and demonstrate this behavior as you patiently wait and take turns entering and leaving the parking lots. Your child’s safety is important to all of us and we need everyone working together to ensure it happens.
I look forward to seeing you this month at our Science Family Night or our Robey Rally on February 26. Don’t forget there is a long weekend for students with no school Friday, February 12 or Monday, February 15 as we honor President’s Day!
Thanks again for your continued support! I hope you will contact me with any ideas or suggestions you have to support our community of learners! I appreciate your feedback.
Best Regards,
Melissa Wisner
