Drug Testing Information

The Litchfield Elementary School District provides convenient home testing kits for tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. These kits are available at each Middle School and are free of charge. Access to these drug kits is meant to empower parents by providing a simple way to detect potential problems in the privacy of the home. These tests have been determined to have a 98% accuracy rate.

Research shows that 1.4 million American teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 are in need of alcohol and/or drug treatment. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), if a child does not start using tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs in the teen years, he or she is much less likely to develop substance abuse problems later in life.

Please contact the school administrator at each site for more information. Tests will be provided in confidence. Parents then can conduct the tests and read the immediate results in private. The Litchfield Elementary School District will have no part in the administration or enforcement of the testing process. Other literature regarding signs and symptoms of tobacco, alcohol, and drug use is also available.

We are providing this service as a tool for parents to start an open discussion with their children about the dangers of drug abuse, and to help parents deal with issues that can interfere with the health of their child. We encourage you to keep the results of testing confidential within your family and any health care provider you might choose to consult.

Having one of these kits in your home may also give your child power to say no to tobacco, alcohol and drugs. They will be able to tell their friends that their parents will test them so they cannot take part in any of these activities. The most effective way to keep your child safe and away from these dangers is open and honest communication.
