Last year Blake Blaylark turned 9 on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Inspired by Dr. King, Blake decided that for his birthday, he would like to give back to his community. His plan was to collect 250 pairs of socks and donate them to homeless people. Blake was able to far exceed his goal and collect over 1,000 pairs of socks.
Blake has decided that he will do this every year for his birthday and hopes that it will grow to help many more people. Once again, he received donations from many generous people. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year Blake, with the help of his twin sisters, a few friends from school and church, and some other family members, was able to distribute 220 bags in the downtown area. Each bag had 3 pairs of socks, a toothbrush, and toothpaste. With money donated, Blake’s team was able to provide breakfast and make 220 sack lunches. Blake was a bit overwhelmed with the need that he saw this year as it was definitely greater than last year.
